Step 1: gate width definition
DLO stands for Daylight Opening measurement. The open space between two objects; typically two of our Gate Posts. Or, two existing structures (house, building, wall, column). Or, between one Gate Post and an existing structure.
GreatFence.com gate widths are not actual. All gate widths are the opening measurement between two gate posts or, sometimes two structures (example: column-mounting one of our driveway gates to two columns using our Heavy Duty Gate Hinges).
In the world of GreatFence.com, gate widths never include the Gate Posts. All Gate Widths (single gates and driveway gates) include the spacing for the gate hinges and the gate lock. Deductions are made at the factory based upon which gate hinge and which gate lock you’ve chosen.
And since, all of our products are custom-made, per order, we can fabricate your gate to any DLO measurement. Just remember to account for Gate Posts if you’re ordering a custom-width gate for an enclosed area.

Step 2a: Ordering a custom width aluminum gate
First, you need to figure out your custom gate width. Then, you’ll need to order (and pay for) the next standard width WIDER than your custom-width. During checkout, simply write your custom gate width in the Order Notes. (Don’t forget to check your emailed receipt for confirmation of your custom width notes).
EXAMPLE 1: you need to put a single gate between your house and your garage. You only have 55 inches of space after installing two of our gate posts. i.e. the gate posts will be 55 inches apart. SOLUTION: order and pay for a 60 inch wide gate and then, during checkout, simply type the following into the Order Notes text box during Checkout:

EXAMPLE 2: You have a 12 foot driveway with 2 feet of grass on each side. The driveway is exactly 12 feet wide and you don’t want to drill any holes in the driveway. You really want a 13 foot wide gate but there is no 13 foot option to select on our website. SOLUTION: order and pay for a 14 foot wide driveway gate. Then, during checkout, simply type into the order notes text box:
