Spear Top Metal FencingThere are many things people assume about aluminum without giving it a chance. Educate yourself on the positive elements of this fencing material.

You don’t need a science degree to know a bit about the different materials you could use for your property’s fence. Many people go straight for wood or chain link when planning a new fence just because these options are readily available and classic. However, as the first thing people see when they arrive at your property, it never hurts to give your fence that “wow” factor. Aluminum and wrought iron both give that polished, elegant look while keeping the place safe, secure and looking top-notch year after year.

Doesn’t aluminum rust?

Many people assume that aluminum fences will rust just like soda cans do. There is a short and a long answer when it comes to aluminum fences rusting. The short answer is that no, it won’t rust. The long answer is that it won’t rust due to the thickness of the material, the coating, and the properties of the actual metal itself.

Aluminum fence panels use a non-flattened, thick aluminum that is specifically made to hold up in all kinds of circumstances. If you are purchasing a commercial or industrial fence, the material will be even thicker. Talk about a sturdy fence! While a soda can might bend and be easily crushed, left on the side of the road to turn to dust, this just isn’t the case for all aluminum. A fence uses tough, thick aluminum and is treated with an amazing powder coating.

Isn’t there a lot of upkeep for the fence and coating?

The powder coating actually helps seal in the aluminum so it can stay in the excellent quality condition it had when you first got it. The great news is that the coating doesn’t need to be re-done every season, allowing the fence to last longer than any other material.

The coating keeps the aluminum fully dry, so there is no problem with rusting. Interestingly, an aluminum fence won’t rust the way you might see a wrought iron fence rusting. That is because when water touches an un-coated aluminum metal fence, the aluminum reacts by oxidizing, making the original metal thicker and more stable than before! This doesn’t mean you should go scratching off the powder coating and wetting the metal, hoping for a magical rust. Just know that the coating and the metal itself all help it to stay completely strong and sturdy, unlike your used soda cans.

Don’t all aluminum fences look the same?

There is a misconception that all aluminum fence panels look the same, giving the buyer no individuality. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Aluminum fence panels come in many sizes, shapes and colors. Of course, the main look of most aluminum fences includes vertical posts with panels of differently-spaced pickets in between. Your creativity can shine with wonderful fence décor and additions, such as finials or spears on the tops of the pickets, puppy panels or privacy panels between the pickets, and different colors to go with your unique property.

Don’t let the lightweight feeling of your fence panels and the fact that they are made of the same material as your soda cans deter you from looking into a commercial or industrial fence made of aluminum. You will be pleasantly surprised by how safe, secure, strong and affordable aluminum fencing is.
