Most jurisdictions in the USA require your posts to be cemented 2 feet into the ground. Some jurisdictions with frost lines require posts to be cemented 3 feet into the ground. Always check your local building codes.
Order post(s) 1 – 2 feet longer than the height of your fence panel or gate (depending on the size of your step. After installation, you can trim this post +plate (Blank Posts Only) from the top->down. Then, gently install post cap on top of the cut.
